Wado Ki Kai - History
The style of Wado Ki Kai was founded by the late John T. Pereira (1941-1993). Since its inception, the art of karate has developed several distinct styles in accordance with the tradition handed down to the various masters of the art. All in all, Master John Pereira's ultimate formation of the style of Wado Ki Kai, or "The Way To Learn From All Things" is, in a very real sense, three distinct yet combined styles of karate -- Zenbudokai, Shorinji Ryu, Doshinkan (in the same order from his instructors: Master Raymond "Duke" Moore, Master Richard Kim, Master Isao Ichikawa). The style Johnny founded was also influenced by other masters he trained with: Mas Oyama (Kyokushinkai), Hidetaka Nishiyama (Shotokan), Yoshiaki Ajari (Wado Ryu), Walter Todd (Shotokan), Marty MacKowski (Tae Kwon Do), Leroy Rodrigues (Shinkyu Shotokan), Rick Alemany (Kenpo). Wado Ki Kai is primarily a Japanese system, traditional katas from Shorinji Ryu, Shotokan, Goju Kai, and Wado Ryu are included. In addition, Okinawan weaponry, Chinese Kung Fu weapons supplement its curriculum. It was John's intent that the ideals of 'character', 'sincerity', 'effort', 'etiquette', and 'self control', as emphasized by Master Funakoshi, plus the ultimate goal of moral perfection will enlighten all who come in contact with his style; and that their lives will be marked by the harmonious interplay of the physical, mental and emotional aspects of their being.
